Framing the creative industries has always been a contested and debatable process. Who are they? What do they do? What are they worth, to whom, and how do we measure this?

While all industries will include an element of creativity within them, as a most basic definition, creative industries can be distinguished from other industries in that creativity is used to create value for their consumers.
Valuing Australia’s Creative Industries finds that the creative industries cover a diverse range of sectors: Music and Performing Arts; Film, Television & Radio; Advertising and Marketing; Software Development and Interactive Content; Writing, Publishing and Print Media; Design and Visual Arts; and Architecture.

The creative industries workforce takes into account direct employment within creative industry sectors (both the creatives and support staff working within a design studio for example) as well as creative professionals working outside of the creative industries, in say manufacturing or finance businesses – known as embedded creatives.

Think of a graphic designer working within a government agency, or an industrial designer working for an auto manufacturer.
